The Natural Method
Here at La Jolla Leashless K9, The Natural Method is our behavioral approach. Dogs have several natural drives and the most important one for behavioral work is RANK (another way of describing Pack Theory). The most important principle is that each member of the pack knows where he or she stands at all times. This placement is what provides a happy and content family structure.
An identical process will occur between you and your dog. Proper communication is the key to success with The Natural Method. Many training systems fail because the owner is never taught the importance of speaking in a language that the dog is able to understand. If you understand and utilize correct communication you will be able to place your dog properly. If not, behavioral problems result.
Our head trainer and behavioral specialist, Zona Lai, was trained for 5 years by master trainer Roger Therriault. Roger had classical training in five different methods, including: The American Kennel Club, United States Canine Academy, The Monks of New Skete, The Koehler Method, and Schutzhund training methods. He’s trained dogs for 40 years. Zona has had her own dog training team, La Jolla Leashless K9, for 15 years.
Her experience with these methods combined with more than 30 years of treating patients as a Clinical Psychologist in her private practice, has proven that The Integrated Natural Method meets the needs of more owners than any other method. Zona believes that in addition to experience, being a good owner requires a commitment to an open mind and a continual learning process that incorporates new ideas and application to further their relationship with their dog.
Meet our Trainers
-
Zona Lai
HEAD TRAINER
Zona is a retired clinical psychologist with a background in neuropsychology, having trained at the Salk Institute, The Boston VA Hospital, and Boston University School of Medicine. After years dedicated to rescue and rehoming, she honed advanced, service-level dog training skills under master trainer Roger and opened her own training kennel in 2011. Today, Zona leads a team of trainers, which she selected for their wonderful relationships with dogs, as well as their expertise in non-dog related activities. She handles K9 training for the federally funded PET Project therapy dog initiative, and works with a wide range of dogs—from service animals to shelter rescues—helping them become confident, well-mannered companions.

Jimmy Duron
TRAINER
Jim, the original co-trainer, helped Zona open the kennel in 2011. He gave lessons (he’s great with people), shared specialized tips, and made owners smile. Since 2019, he’s trained with Zona on the flagship PET project in Imperial Valley, bringing therapy dogs into Behavioral Health sites to greet clients, support outpatient treatment, and attend community events promoting Behavioral Health programs. His law enforcement career adds self-discipline, attention to detail, and expertise with police dogs. With Zona from the start, Jim earns the OG spotlight!
